If you’re wondering what all the hype is about on Tiktok, check out today’s blog to see why it’s important that you don’t overlook TikTok in your marketing strategy, and what you can do to establish your brand on TikTok. This is one App you do not want to ignore!

TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in the world, and it’s only been around for three years! It already has a whopping 500 million active users worldwide in just three years. To understand how impressive these numbers are: Instagram took six years to achieve those kinds of numbers, and Facebook took four years.

So what does this mean for the app? It has exceeded the expectations set by Facebook and Instagram, two of the largest social media platforms in the world!

In quarter one of 2019, TikTok alone had 33 million downloads in the Apple App Store. More than YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. Tiktok is a crowd-pleaser with the younger generation, Gen Z. 41% of users are reported to be between the ages of 16-24.

Early Mover Advantage…

I think it’s safe to say there’s an early mover’s advantage for TikTok. If you’re marketing to a younger demographic, you definitely need to be on TikTok; but even if your brand targets a different age range, teenagers tend to be ahead of the curve with spotting what’s cool before it’s really cool. (Even if we don’t always like to admit it!)

The list of brands on TikTok already includes Nike, Fenty Beauty, Apple Music, Gary Vee… I could go on, but I think you get the idea: big names are following this trend, and you should be too!

So how can you gain a following and establish your brand on TikTok?

  1. One great strategy is simply to see what’s currently trending

on TikTok and to create videos surrounding those viral hashtags. It’s a huge advantage that the interface of this app is simple and collaborative. It really only takes ten seconds to easily see what is trending, which will help you decide what to create and post.

  2. Use outside apps to create your content.

I recently read an article by Tooty McNooty (a TikTok influencer with over 2 million followers!) and she mentioned that she uses a number of apps outside of TikTok to create viral content. You could try out animation apps like FlipaClip, Procreate, and VideoLeap. In the article, she explains “Most of my animations are inspired by TikTok trends and creators that come and go constantly.” She then puts her own spin on it to make it very uniquely hers.

  3. Join Challenges.

Recently, Jimmy Fallon hosted his own challenge on TikTok, which gave the app even more notoriety, and brought all of his Late Night Show fans onto the platform. Grow your reach and recognition by engaging in a challenge like his #tumbleweedchallenge.

  4. Influencer Marketing Campaigns:

Universal Pictures and other brands have already begun Influencer Marketing Campaigns on TikTok. (This is the perfect opportunity for an entrepreneur to jump in on the ground floor!) But be cautious: the analytics on TikTok are limited. You won’t be able to track when a video is posted. Also, you’ll need to be aware that bots and fake influencers can be harder to spot on TikTok. (You can check out the quality of their comments for a pretty simple way to detect whether it’s a bot or not! For example, many times, a bot will post basic, short comments like, “beautiful!” instead of a more thorough comment that actually has to do with the content itself.)

  5. Finally, let’s take a look at how Gary Vee is using TikTok to grow his brand! He’s a social media genius and knows how to re-purpose his content to create lots of quality for his followers.

  • Re-purposing content is extremely helpful when starting up a new platform like this, and it will help you to always have something ready to post. You’ll just need to be sure that it’s relevant to that platform and demographic.
  • If you take a look at Gary Vee’s Instagram and TikTok, you’ll see similar videos. However, he makes subtle changes! Changing the Screen Dimensions for example, and even the copy for TikTok.

So, for minimal additional work, by marketing via TikTok, you could potentially reach a  different audience entirely, and create a wider scope of possible clients for your business. I hope these tips make it helpful for you to start advertising on TikTok, and definitely let me know in the comments below if you’re going to start utilizing TikTok in your marketing strategy. And if you’re not, tell me why not?!

That’s all for now. See you next week!
